Term, Whole Life, GUL or IUL: Which Life Insurance Is Right for You?
As Life Insurance Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re sharing one final reminder: life insurance is worth understanding before you need it.
At Shepherd Insurance, we know life insurance can feel complicated, especially when terms like term, whole life, GUL, and IUL enter the conversation. But understanding the basics can make choosing coverage a lot less overwhelming.
Here’s a simple breakdown of four common types of life insurance and what each is designed to do.
What is Term Life Insurance?
Term life insurance provides coverage for a specific period, commonly 10, 20, or 30 years.
It can be a good option for protecting financial responsibilities during a certain stage of life, such as:
- Replacing income your family depends on
- Paying a mortgage
- Providing for children or other dependents
- Covering other temporary financial obligations
Because term life typically does not build cash value, it is often more affordable than permanent life insurance.
What is Whole Life Insurance?
Whole life insurance is designed to provide lifelong coverage as long as required premiums are paid and the policy remains in force.
It also includes a cash value component that can grow over time according to the policy’s terms.
Whole life may be worth considering for someone looking for permanent coverage and cash value, although premiums are generally higher than term insurance.
What is Guaranteed Universal Life (GUL)?
Guaranteed Universal Life, or GUL, is permanent life insurance focused primarily on long-term death benefit protection.
Rather than emphasizing cash value growth, GUL is generally designed for someone looking for long-term coverage with an emphasis on guarantees.
What is Indexed Universal Life (IUL)?
Indexed Universal Life, or IUL, combines permanent life insurance with a cash value component.
Interest credited to the cash value may be linked to the performance of a market index, subject to the policy’s terms and limitations.
IUL can offer additional flexibility and cash value potential, but it is also more complex. It’s important to understand features such as caps, participation rates, policy charges, and loans before choosing this type of coverage.
Which Type of Life Insurance is Right for You?
There isn’t one type of life insurance that’s right for everyone. Your coverage should depend on your needs, goals, budget, and how long you need protection.
A simple way to compare your options:
Need coverage for a specific period? Term life may be worth considering.
Want permanent coverage with cash value? Whole life may be an option.
Want long-term protection focused on a guaranteed death benefit? GUL may be worth discussing.
Interested in permanent coverage with index-linked cash value potential? IUL may be an option to explore.
Policy features, costs, guarantees, and availability vary by carrier and policy.
When Should You Review Your Life Insurance?
Your life insurance needs can change as your life changes. Marriage, having or adopting a child, buying a home, changing jobs, or starting a business can all be good reasons to review your coverage.
If you have life insurance through your employer, it’s also worth understanding how much coverage you have and what happens to it if you leave your job.
Already have a term policy? Check whether it includes a conversion option. Some policies allow eligible term coverage to be converted to permanent life insurance without new medical underwriting, subject to policy terms and deadlines.
